The Erbil Criminal Court sentenced two journalists to six years in prison for trying to overthrow the government.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Press Freedom <\/span><\/span>Advocacy Association <\/span><\/span>has learned from<\/span><\/span>the<\/span><\/span> journalists’ lawyers <\/span><\/span>Asso<\/span><\/span> Hashem that <\/span><\/span>Sherwan<\/span><\/span>Shirwani<\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span>Kohdar<\/span><\/span> Zebari<\/span><\/span>, as well as activists <\/span><\/span>Shafan<\/span><\/span> Saeed, <\/span><\/span>Ayaz<\/span><\/span> Karam<\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span>Herwan<\/span><\/span> Issa, were sentenced to death under articles 47 and 48 of the Iraqi Penal Code on charges of trying to overthrow the government.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The lawyer indicated that he was in the process of <\/span><\/span>cassating<\/span><\/span> the sentence.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Press <\/span><\/span>freedom<\/span><\/span> Advocacy Association<\/span><\/span> was astonished<\/span><\/span> at the adaptation of the charge to political articles related to the overthrow of the government, <\/span><\/span>and <\/span><\/span>considers the articles and publications of journalists to be part of the freedom of expression guaranteed constitutionally, and that the origin of their detention constitutes a flagrant constitutional violation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The association calls on the federal government to press the regional government to prevent the registration of prisoners of <\/span><\/span>opinion<\/span><\/span> in Iraq, which occupies the world’s<\/span><\/span> lowest<\/span><\/span> rankings for the freedom of journalistic work.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span><\/span>Association<\/span><\/span> also <\/span><\/span>pleads<\/span><\/span> the international community to press the regional government to stop intimidating and <\/span><\/span>abusing<\/span><\/span> journalists.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The two journalists were arrested nearly five months ago in connection with popular protests against living conditions in several parts of Kurdistan.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
