Riot police severely beat Asia Correspondent <\/span><\/span>Haidar<\/span><\/span>Saleh while covering protests in Najaf<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Haidar<\/span><\/span> said<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> o<\/span><\/span>n a telephone call<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> to the Press Freedom<\/span><\/span>Advocacy Association<\/span><\/span> in Iraq<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> that he was surprised that members of the riot police beat him with batons while covering the protests in the center of Najaf province, and although he had shown his <\/span><\/span>ID<\/span><\/span>, the force beat him, forcing him and his cameraman Zaid al-Salami to leave the scene immediately<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Since Saturday, demonstrations have <\/span><\/span>erupted<\/span><\/span> in Najaf province to demand the sacking of the governor and his two deputies<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

At the time that<\/span><\/span> the Association wishes safety to fellow reporters, it <\/span><\/span>considers these incidents as<\/span><\/span> flagrant violation<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span> of the freedom of journalistic and media work<\/span><\/span> that is clearly <\/span><\/span>guaranteed by <\/span><\/span>the Iraqi constitution<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span><\/span>Association<\/span><\/span> also calls on the security leadership in Najaf to hold accountable<\/span><\/span> all<\/span><\/span> members of the force that attacked the reporter, to stop harassing journalists <\/span><\/span>on duty<\/span><\/span>, and to comply with the constitution<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
